· Three new students have joined the team. Josef Hoffman and Sam Best will be starting graduate school in the Fall and Seth Bradley will be starting in January. Look for their bio’s soon. · Keegan Roberts and Samantha Danchuk both successfully defended their dissertations this spring and received their Ph.D.’s at the May graduation. Look for graduate party pics in a couple of weeks. Samantha is now working for CP&E in south Florida and Keegan is working for FTN & Associates. · Jason Braud successfully defended his M.S. thesis and will graduate in May. He is now living in Quantico, VA attending The Basic School as a new 1st Lt. Semper Fi Jason! · Erol Karadogan and Jessica Mason made presentations and Jason Braud had a poster at the 2008 American Water Resources Association Annual Conference held in New Orleans. · Sam Danchuk recently made a presentation at the 2008 Clean Gulf Conference in San Antonio, TX. · Joseph Tsai successfully defended his M.S. thesis and graduated in August 2008. He is now living in San Francisco, CA with his new wife Lucia and is working for Moffat and Nichols. · See Joseph’s Party Page for some pictures from a recent get-together to congratulate Joseph on finishing his M.S. and to meet his new wife. · Joseph Tsai recently made a presentation on his hydrologic and salt budget modeling work at the 2008 Greater Everglades Ecosystem Restoration Meeting. · Ryan Waldron successfully defended his M.S. thesis and graduated in May 2008. He is now working for URS Corp. in Metairie, LA. · Erol Karadogan presented his latest research on the hydrodynamic and sediment transport modeling in the Lower Mississippi River delta at the 2008 American Academy of Mechanics conference held in New Orleans. · Samantha Danchuk just got back from a two month internship in Australia working with Applied Science Associates. Right after she returned, she made a presentation at the 2008 IOSC in Savannah, GA. · Marten Hellen, one of the TU Delft students who spent some time with our group last spring, was honored as the ScienceGuide Student of 2007. See the link for more details. · We just received an NSF grant (with co-PIs Thompson and Moe) to use synchrotron X-ray microtomography to look at biomass in porous media systems. This project will start in Feb. 2008. · Erol Karadogan presented a poster at the 2007 Fall AGU Conference on our work modeling river flow and sediment transport in the Lower Mississippi River Delta. · Jason Braud and Jessica Mason presented a paper at the 2008 American Water Resources Association Spring Specialty Conference, “GIS and Water Resources” be held this coming March in San Mateo, CA. · Zaydoun Abu-Salem graduated in August 2007 with his Ph.D. · Nate Dill graduated in May 2007 with his M.S. and is now working for Woods Hole Group in East Falmouth, MA. · The group welcomes three new M.S. students · Jason Braud, B.S. Ocean Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy · Molly Friedmann, B.S. Civil and Environmental Engineering (minor in Geology) from LSU · Jessica Mason, B.S. Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Mississippi Jason and Jessica will be working on the East Ascension Parish hydrology project and Molly will be working in the area of coastal sediment transport. · Molly Friedmann was awarded a Louisiana Board of Regents Fellowship from the LSU College of Engineering. In addition to helping out with the SSPM model, Molly will also be working on a project with Jaye Cable (LSU Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences) looking at sediment transport in several estuaries in southern California. · Erol Karadogan and Joseph Tsai traveled to the University of Minnesota to participate in the National Center for Earth-Surface Dynamics Graduate Student Retreat and Site Visit. · We received another three years of funding from the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Coastal Engineering Division to perform physical and numerical modeling of river flow and sediment diversions in the lower Mississippi River Delta. · We were awarded at two year project funded by the Ascension Parish Drainage Board to help · East Ascension with their hydrologic analyses and drainage issues. · The group made a presentation at the 2007 ASCE Coastal Sediments Conference held in May in New Orleans, LA. · Our group hosted four students from Delft University. The students were in Louisiana to work on a project focusing on the long-term inundation safety of New Orleans. They spent several days at LSU working with some of our students at the Small-scale Physical Model. Clayton Fellowship from the LSU College of Engineering · Sam Danchuk is part of the LSU NSF-sponsored IGERT program, Computational Fluid Dynamics
