Research Interests
Environmental restoration of impaired waterbodies and watersheds through sensor network-based monitoring, watershed-based modeling, and LID-based mitigation.
- Environmental Fluid Mechanics: Mathematical modeling of pollutant dispersion and sediment transport in surface waters; development of wireless sensor station-networked water quality monitoring and assessment system; sediment pollution; water quality modeling; experimental studies of mixing and dispersion of turbulent jets and plumes using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) technology; outfall diffuser design; and integration of mathematical simulation models with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- River Restoration: Design and restoration of river and stream ecosystems; uncertainty analysis of stream restoration; hydraulic geometry of natural rivers; ecological processes and their impacts on stream water quality; modeling of hyporheic and riparian exchange, contaminant attenuation capacity of hyporheic and riverbed sediments.
- Watershed Restoration: Fate and transport of sediment and diffuse source pollutants; impacts of land use changes on water quality, fluvial processes, and stream ecosystem; watershed modeling; stormwater management; low impact development (LID) and sustainability; beach water quality modeling and forecasting; development and evaluation of TMDLs (Total Maximum Daily Loads) and BMPs (Best Management Practices).
