 Biography

RESEARCH INTEREST
  • Hurricane Evacuation Demand Estimation
  • Traffic safety
  • Data collection for transportation planning
  • Transferability of transportation planning data.
Current Research Activities

Modeling Hurricane Evacuation Traffic
Various methods of hurricane evacuation demand estimation were investigated, including the use of logistic regression, neural networks, and discrete choice modeling. A time-dependent sequential logit model was estimated on survey data from hurricanes Andrew in Louisiana, and Floyd in South Carolina, to produce a model that is sensitive to characteristics of the storm, the area being threatened, and the population in the area. The Gravity and Intervening Opportunity Model formulations were tested as to their ability to reproduce aggregate evacuation destination choice. Current research is aimed at establishing a disaggregate destination choice model that is sensitive to dynamic conditions in the network and at the destination. Other research is aimed at collecting stated preference data on dynamic evacuation behavior.

Statewide Traffic Safety Study
The objective of this study is to identify and quantify the factors contributing to highway crashes in Louisiana. Phase I of the project included a review of studies conducted to identify factors affecting road safety, and a review of data, legislation, programs, and funding related to road safety. This part of the study is reported in Louisiana Transportation Research Center Technical Report 399. Phase II of the project will use the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, the General Estimates System, and the Louisiana Crash Data to identify areas in which Louisiana has poorer safety performance than it's peer states, and then establish a model that relates the condition in these safety areas with human, roadway, and vehicle factors.

Cost-effective data collection for Metropolitan Transportation Organizations in Louisiana
This study investigates the transferability of transportation planning data, the use of small local panels to update transferred data, and the application of GPS-technology to the collection of travel data. The transferability of trip rates, mode shares, and trip length distributions from the National Personal Transportation Survey of 1995 and the North Central Texas Council of Governments Survey of 1996 to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, were tested by comparing their values with those of a local survey conducted in 1997. A local panel of 108 survey respondents were surveyed in late 1998 and early 1999 using random digit dialing recruitment and a new form 'daily organizer' type mail-out, mail-back diary. Travel data was collected using a dashboard mounted GPS instrument in vehicles of colleagues and acquaintances. Procedures were developed to interpret the GPS information collected and to prepare it for presentation in a GIS.
