The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at LSU offers a B.S. degree in Environmental Engineering. It is the only Environmental Engineering program on the central Gulf Coast. Since the program was initiated in 1995, the program has produced hundreds of graduates who work in industry, consulting and governmental agencies across the U.S. LSU’s Environmental Engineering program participates in the Academic Common Market (http://www.sreb.org/page/1304/academic_common_market.html). In addition to Louisiana, residents from Mississippi, Alabama and Kentucky can enroll in the program without paying out-of-state tuition. The Environmental Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
In order to achieve the program educational objectives, the graduates of the Environmental Engineering program shall:
Objective 1 – be active in practice, research, education, or management in their engineering and professional careers;
Objective 2 - display technical proficiency, innovation, analytical and problem-solving skills in the execution of their work;
Objective 3 - have the skills necessary to be an accomplished and technologically-advanced communicator;
Objective 4 – be cognizant and appreciative of the need for professional licensure and life-long learning; and
Objective 5 – be engaged as an active member in their profession, community or other organizations that benefit society.
What Environmental EngineerS Do
Environmental engineers use the principles of biology, chemistry and physics to develop solutions to environmental problems. Environmental engineers work in water pollution and air pollution control, recycling and sustainability, waste disposal, climate change and public health issues. They are responsible for municipal water supply and wastewater treatment in urban and rural areas. They also work to reduce risk from hazardous materials in the environment by designing safe disposal methods and remediation methods for contaminated soil, sediment and water. Environmental engineers are not only concerned with local and regional issues but work on problems of global significance, including the world water and sanitation crisis, the impacts of population growth and climate change.
Environmental engineers work as consultants, for governmental organizations, non-profits and industry. Environmental engineering is one of the fastest growing disciplines in engineering and employment projections are very strong. A degree in environmental engineering is also excellent preparation for an advanced degree in environmental law, medicine or public health.
