WHAT: On April 16th, 2007, twenty-seven students and five professors at Virginia Tech were killed in the worst school shooting in US history. We intend to honor the victims of the shootings on the weekend of the LSU-VT football game, Saturday September 8th, 2007. WHO: Of the thirty-two victims, nine were in an advanced hydrology classroom, one of the most localized areas of violence. The organizations behind this tribute have decided to host eight students and one professor to honor their fallen colleagues. Please see the Participants page for more information on the deserving individuals that will be attending this tribute. WHY: LSU and Saints football games in Tiger Stadium were magical occasions after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. This is one place where the community came together and forgot about their troubles. Our intentions are to allow these students the same opportunity many of us had, to experience a reprieve from their trials in Tiger Stadium. Universities across the nation helped the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster in US history; now LSU has the unique opportunity to host deserving students and a professor adjusting to life after the worst school shooting in US history. Furthermore, a donation to the Hokie Spirit Scholarship Fund will be made with any additional funds after travel expenses. This gesture is similar to the LSU Student Relief Fund, funded by individuals, organizations, and companies throughout the world, to assist Hurricane Katrina and Rita impacted students at LSU. AGENDA: The guests will travel to New Orleans, LA on Thursday, September 6th, 2007. Friday morning will include a tour of New Orleans and lunch at a classic New Orleans establishment. Next they will head to downtown Baton Rouge to see the capital and governor's mansion. Saturday, September 8th, 2007 will be filled with a full day of LSU tailgating as we show these individuals true Cajun/Southern Hospitality. For Saturday night, we will provide tickets to the matchup between #2 LSU and #9 VT under the lights of Tiger Stadium. Sunday will include a flight back to Virginia after a great weekend of fun. HOW YOU CAN HELP: There are three main ways you can support this tribute. FUNDING: Please see the Sponsorship and Donation pages. Any amount will be graciously accepted! LODGING: If you know a great place near or on campus to host these individual please email chiepsilon@lsu.edu. Suggestions include on campus dorms and churches. FOOD: If you make the best Boudin Balls show off by donating a bowl. If your specialty is Jambalaya, donate a pot. Consider the times that the individuals will be in town. Food is needed throughout the weekend, not just during tailgate time; however, invitations to tailgating sites are welcomed. Invitations to date include the Virginia Tech Baton Rouge/New Orleans Alumni, Baton Rouge ASCE Chapter, TigerDroppings.com and the LOOP GAROU Krewe tailgates. With your help this will be a truly special event! Let's show the Virginia Tech Nation that we do remember what happen and support their struggle and recovery; just as they supported ours. Thank you, Stuart Adams BSCE May 2008 President, Chi Epsilon at LSU chiepsilon@lsu.edu |
